In the heart of India’s agricultural landscape, a transformative initiative is taking root—the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF). Launched in November 2024, this mission represents a significant shift towards sustainable and chemical-free farming practices, aiming to rejuvenate the nation’s soil health and ensure the well-being of both farmers and consumers.
Understanding Natural Farming
Natural farming is a method that emphasizes harmony with nature, utilizing traditional knowledge passed down through generations. It involves practices such as integrating local livestock, diversifying crop systems, and eliminating chemical inputs. By adhering to local agro-ecological principles, natural farming fosters biodiversity, enhances soil fertility, and builds resilience against climate challenges.
Objectives of NMNF
The NMNF is designed with clear goals:
- Promote Chemical-Free Farming: Encourage farmers to adopt methods that do not rely on synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.
- Reduce Input Costs: Support farmers in decreasing their dependence on externally purchased inputs, thereby lowering cultivation expenses.
- Enhance Soil Health: Rejuvenate and maintain healthy soil ecosystems to ensure long-term agricultural productivity.
- Provide Nutritious Food: Ensure the availability of safe and nutritious food for all citizens.
Implementation Strategy
Over the next two years, the mission aims to establish 15,000 clusters across willing Gram Panchayats, reaching out to 10 million farmers and initiating natural farming on 7.5 lakh hectares of land. To facilitate this, approximately 10,000 Bio-input Resource Centres (BRCs) will be set up, providing farmers with easy access to natural farming inputs.
Additionally, around 2,000 Natural Farming Model Demonstration Farms will be established at Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Agricultural Universities, and farmers’ fields. These will serve as training hubs, supported by experienced Farmer Master Trainers, to educate willing farmers on natural farming practices and input preparation.
Financial Commitment
The Union Cabinet has approved a total outlay of ₹2,481 crore for the NMNF until the 15th Finance Commission period (2025-26). This includes ₹1,584 crore from the Government of India and ₹897 crore as the state’s share, underscoring a robust financial commitment to sustainable agriculture.
Human Stories: Farmers Leading the Change
Beyond policies and numbers, the true essence of the NMNF lies in the stories of farmers embracing natural farming. In the Chhindwara region of Madhya Pradesh, for instance, farmers like Sagar Dhomne have transitioned to organic cotton farming. Inspired by organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and local associations like SRIJAN, these farmers have improved soil health, reduced costs, and increased profits by adopting sustainable practices.
Similarly, in the Nilgiris region of southern India, indigenous communities and ecologists are working together to restore native forests that were once replaced by tea plantations. By replanting native species, they are transforming degraded landscapes back into thriving forests, supporting local biodiversity and providing habitats for numerous plant and animal species unique to the area.

The NMNF is more than a policy; it’s a movement towards a sustainable and resilient agricultural future. By embracing natural farming, India is taking decisive steps to nurture its soil, protect biodiversity, and secure the health of its people. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “The National Mission on Natural Farming… marks a transformative shift in Indian agriculture. Through this effort, we are nurturing soil health, protecting biodiversity, and securing our agricultural future.”
