“If agriculture goes wrong, nothing else will have a chance to go right in the country.” -M. S. Swaminathan.
As we all know Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy and it is the primary source of livelihood for about 58% of India’s population. Gross Value Added by agriculture is at a growing pace.
So in order to make citizens understand the importance of farmer’s contributions to the society and overall economic, social development of a country and to honor the birth anniversary of the 5th Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh, and his contribution to the agriculture sector, KISAN DIWAS is celebrated on 23rd December.
Despite briefly serving as prime minister between 1979 and 1980, Chaudhary Charan Singh is widely regarded as one of the country’s most famous peasant leaders. He played a very important role in the Agricultural sector of India:-
● He made continuous efforts to keep agriculture at the center of planning for India.
● He took a leading part in the formulation and finalization of the Debt Redemption Bill 1939.
● He was instrumental in bringing about the Land Holding Act, 1960.
● He was the author of several books and pamphlets, including ‘Abolition of Zamindari, India’s Poverty and its Solution, and Prevention of Division of Holdings Below a Certain Minimum.
SIGNIFICANCE OF KISAN DIWAS
Agriculture, despite being the most prominent means of life for so many people, not many are aware of the problems that farmers face. They remain ignorant about the necessary information about this section of the country.
Therefore, this day holds a vital significance as it lays the idea of empowering the farmers of the society. Annually, on this occasion, several programs are arranged across the country. These events have a significant impact on the farmer community and they provide them with platforms for voicing their aspirations and demands. Agricultural scientists showcase the latest in technology and science to assist farmers in maximizing their output. The Government also supports farmers by organizing various competitions in which the winners are awarded prizes.
No doubt, the Government is taking various initiatives to fulfill the benchmark of doubling the income of farmers and increasing their living standards by various initiatives naming few, PM-Kisan, PM-Kusum, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY), Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). But only Government initiatives are not sufficient. We as one nation should support our farmers. We should be grateful for the efforts of those hands that work day and night for us to have a better livelihood. On the same note, the Government should also provide fair prices for their produce with proper consultancy. They are the ones who work round the clock to ensure that people do not starve and die of hunger, but the sad reality is that they are the ones struggling for 2 square meals a day. We can change this scenario with collective efforts to continue the vision of Chaudhary Charan Singh.
