Choose life

Just asking ‘How are you?’ is broad, due to the extents of negative stigma we have in today’s society around expressing emotions and possible deterioration of mental health in one. It is so easy for someone suffering to say ‘I’m okay’ simply because it’s what is expected and covers up behind the mask negative stigmas and mental illness.

According to the World Health Organisation, Health encompasses the composite union of physical, spiritual, mental, and social dimensions. This recognizes mental health and well-being are fundamental to the quality of life. But the neglect is quite evident as 50 million Indians suffer from depression according to the WHO. Also, Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the world with its rate being 4 times higher in men than in women. It is highest among the youth. Annually a million people die because of suicide. Unemployment, homelessness, poverty, social abuse, social isolation, other life stress and loss can increase the likelihood of suicide.Recently, the news of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who hanged himself in a room, has left everyone in shock. In the 21st century, the suicide rates have increased in India and in the world. So, lets just understand complex psychology behind it.

Well, we all have some sceptical thoughts about suicide. Some people tend to become judgemental on the life choices of the victim. Some say only weak-minded people attempt this. Let’s clear our thoughts first. Suicide is a highly complex and multifaceted phenomenon with many contributing variables. Neurobiology, personal and family history, stressful events, and socio-cultural environment leads to the most severe underlying psychological processes and human behaviour that leads to suicide ideation.

Talking about psychology, the most common factor is unbearable mental pain. Again, this can happen to anyone in any situation. When an individual accept that the problem is much bigger than his or her cognitive abilities, esteem and social environment, then for escaping that feeling solution ends up to suicide or a state of homeostasis. The probability of arrival at any conclusion is also the probability for all. Some take time to find a stronger version of themselves and start over finding an option. While, some find suicide the only option. So, the matter is a particular thought at that moment.

Moreover, in addition to anxiety and depressive symptoms, cognitive deficits are also there. These include attentional bias, impulsivity, problem solving and decision-making deficits.

The best way to get out is-“TALK!” Do not suffer alone. Talk to your family, friends, or anyone you trust and get a way out. Awareness is a must. Mental health needs attention and there is nothing abnormal or shameful about this. Further, there is a therapy called ‘Talk Therapy’, in the form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). Take help, National Suicide Prevention Helpline, AASRA at 022-2754-6669 is available and the calls are confidential. Always remember, It’s okay to ask for help, It’s okay to take a break, It’s okay to let go, It’s okay to say no, It’s okay not to be okay. Things always get better! Hold yourself, even if it seems to be breaking down forever. Choose to be happy! Mental health needs to be taken seriously and people need to be educated and motivated.
